Ethical standards are relative in nature. For example, in the Middle East, what is considered as ethical treatment of women would be very different from that of the west. This means that today, it is difficult to know what exactly is ethical or not based on human standards. Education is NOT the right tool to set standards, for what is acceptable or not varies widely. In the Nethelands for example, it is alright to practice mercy killing; but here, you can go to jail.
For us Christians (and actually for the whole world), we believe in absolute standards. These are set from the day Mosaic laws were given to men via Moses on Mt Sinai. The revelation of God's laws was completed with the New Testament, and so all ethical standards must be via God's absolute standard, and not man's own experience or 'learning process'.
Mankind may have progressed in some areas, but there is no denying that given the right circumstances, people still behave like cavemen, in one way or another. The entire Holocaust experience would be one sad reminder that despite material progress, the human kind is still, Totally Deprived.
