There are many specific prohibition with certain food groups especially in the book of Leviticus. But these are considered as health-related, as the Israelites were living in hostile environment. Also, some believe they were issued to test obedience.

The apostle Paul clarified in the New Testament that all food can be consumed, when he wrote in 1 Cor 8 and 9 that all food are made for man; what defiles a man is not external things but internal.

As for pets as food, this is all relative and is not absolute. The westerners eat beef, which is considered as sacred in India. They forbade the Koreans from eating dogs, because they are their house pets and look 'cute'. Sadly, pigs do not look cute so they get eaten. There is little logic in this.
